LIBRARY FOCUS - February 18, 2007
by Cris Adams

BOOKS ON CD FOR YOUNG ADULTS ADDED AT LIBRARY

Enthusiasm by Polly Shulman is narrated by Jennifer Ikeda. It's the story of Julie, a quiet bookworm whose best friend Ashleigh is totally different. Now Ash is obsessed with Julie's favorite book, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and she's determined to find their personal Misters Darcy.

Ikeda also performs Paul Acampora's Defining Dulcie. Just as sixteen-year-old Dulcie is coming to terms with the accidental death of her father, her mother decides to move to California, leaving behind everything Dulcie knows, including her grandfather. An old Chevy truck is all they have left of her father, and when Mom decides to sell it, Dulcie takes matters into her own hands.

Fifteen-year-old Victor Flores can barely grow enough corn to support his widowed mom and four younger siblings. But when Mexican corn prices plunge, he leaves his small village to illegally enter the U.S. and help his starving family. With no money to hire smugglers or bribe officials, Victor sets out on his brutal journey with little more than dogged determination. Ramon de Ocampo performs Crossing the Wire by Will Hobbs.

Ocampo also narrates In the Break by Jack Lopez. Jamie and Juan are best friends who live and breathe surfing. When an argument erupts between Jamie and his abusive stepfather, the boys head for Mexico. But their adventure can only last so long, and tragedy lurks around the bend.

After being expelled from her stuffy boarding school, Cyd is coping with her new circumstances in San Francisco until her mom becomes disturbed by the teenager's rebellious attitude and choice of friends. Cyd is sent back east to live with her real dad, and how she adjusts to a new life and family is the subject of Gingerbread by Rachel Cohn, read by Carine Montbertrand.

Myra Taylor narrates Copper Sun by Sharon Draper. Fifteen-year-old Amari witnesses the destruction of her remote African village and is then sold into slavery. There she meets an indentured white girl, Polly, and the gentle wife of the plantation owner. Amari and Polly soon find that by working together, freedom could be possible.
