LOUIS L'AMOUR TOPS LIST OF LIBRARY'S NEW FICTION

Western writer Louis L'Amour remains American's favorite storyteller. The Collected Short Stories of Louis L'Amour: The Adventure Stories is the fourth volume of his masterful tales of adventure. Included in this one is his first story every to be published.

Ann Ripley's Death in the Orchid Garden is another in her series of gardening mysteries starring Louise Eldridge. This time she takes her public television garden show on the road to Hawaii. But the tropical paradise isn't so idyllic once murder makes an unexpected appearance.

Science fiction fans will find Blindsight by Peter Watts. A space probe hears a whisper from the edge of the solar system: a faint signal sweeping the cosmos like a lighthouse beam. Whatever's out there isn't talking to us. So a group of very unlikely characters are sent to force introductions on an intelligence with motives unknown.

Adriana Trigiani's new novel is Home to Big Stone Gap. Full of humor and heart, wisdom and hope, this story revolves around Ave Marie, for whose family Big Stone Gap has been home for generations. But a coal company threatens to undermine the community's way of life and the mountain landscape, and Ave Marie's world is turned upside down.

New nonfiction includes the Desk Reference to Nature's Medicine by Steven Foster. It's been put together by experts in the herbal medicine field and talks about the medicinal properties of 150 therapeutic plants.

The cruiser USS Houston was a prize target trapped in the far Pacific after Pearl Harbor. In Ship of Ghosts, James Hornfischer brings to life the terror of nighttime naval battles as the crew faced a superior Japanese force, the eventual sinking of the ship, and the capture of its survivors. But the prisoners fought back against their dehumanization with dignity, ingenuity, sabotage, and an undying faith that their country would prevail.

Walt Disney by Neal Gabler is the full story of a man whose work left its brand on our culture but whose life has largely been shrouded in myth.

There's also Do-It-Yourself Home Improvement by Julian Cassell, Greg Atkinson's "West Coast Cooking," and "The Complete Guide to Calligraphy."
