LIBRARY FOCUS - December 17, 2006

NEW BOOK DESCRIBES HOW TO DEAL WITH SCROOGES

Please mark your calendars: the library will close at noon on Friday, December 22 and will remain closed over the Christmas weekend. It will open again at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, December 26.

Now let's talk about some new nonfiction titles, starting with Don't Get Scrooged by Richard Carlson. This is a jewel of a handbook on how to avoid, appease, and even win over the Scrooges who haunt your holidays. These include grumps, uninvited guests, sticks-in-the-mud, or supreme party poopers.

Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters is by Meg Meeker. She demonstrates that the most important factor for girls growing up into confident, well-adjusted women is a strong father with conservative values. She also shows dads how to guide their daughters and to stand between them and a toxic culture.

Evan Thomas takes readers inside the naval war of 1941-1945 in the South Pacific in Sea of Thunder. He blends the best of military and cultural history and riveting narrative drama as he describes the last great naval war.

Ty Phillips has written Blacktop Cowboys. It chronicles the 2004 rodeo season through the eyes of several charismatic steer wrestlers trying to make it to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

The Smartest Investment Book You'll Ever Read is by Daniel Solin. The author cuts through the financial propaganda to provide a clear, simple, easy-to-follow road map that will show you how to invest your assets in large, trusted, brand-name fund managers.

There's also War Made New by Max Boot. This one is a sweeping history that shows how technological and strategic revolutions on the battlefield have shaped the rise and fall of nations and empires.

Nancy Burke Smith has written The Complete Book of Grant Writing. It's an excellent addition for anyone seeking funding through government grants, foundation grants, specialty grants, and lots more. Information includes tips on where to apply and how to avoid common mistakes.

Perfect Light Desserts by Nick Malgieri offers plenty of recipes for desserts rich enough to satisfy any sweet tooth-but with sensible calorie counts.

The library staff wishes everyone a very merry Christmas!
